A birthday without masks or physical distance: Manzanero’s son assures that his death could be prevented

Juan Pablo Manzanero, son of singer-songwriter Armando Manzanero, said goodbye to his father with deep pain, but at the same time, with the joy that he had the “best father in the world”. Although he also interpreted the event as a lesson for society: do not lower your guard against covid-19, a virus that ended up taking the life of his father during the early hours of December 28.

“We must give an attentive call to all people to be more responsible,” he told Reforma. “Unfortunately, my father, because of the restlessness that everyone suffers from being tired of being at home, on his birthday he went to freak out, to a family trip.”

It had transpired that on December 7, the author of “This afternoon my rain” celebrated his birthday in a place in Oaxaca, Mexico, along with several members of his family. And suddenly, Juan Pablo saw a photo with thirty people, without a mask, and thought: “what an irresponsible thing”.

Later, the musician moved to Mérida – his hometown – to inaugurate the Museo Casa Manzanero. There the musician began with symptoms and respiratory difficulties, for which he was admitted on December 17 to a hospital. The singer-songwriter fell ill and all of Juan Pablo’s brothers were infected. “My boss, unfortunately, with diabetes, at 85, and with a screwed up kidney … Wow, sadness!”

Juan Pablo knew that his father was a restless person.

“Hey dad,” her son warned her once, “don’t go dating.”

“It’s just that if I stay at home I’ll die,” the singer-songwriter replied.

“He is a person who was always very active, and he is also something that we are experiencing as a world, which must be taken seriously”, he reflected. “Not having parties, that no matter how much we want to see our loved ones … no.”
