Eating in a restaurant is probably safer than eating at home, says multi-star French chef Alain Ducasse, who asked the government for a “partial unconfining of responsible restoration”.
“Today it is better to eat in a restaurant that is a little careful than at home when one is forced to go to a supermarket where everyone touches the fruits, crosses and does not wear masks,” Ducasse told the AFP news agency.
“The restoration will be better in terms of health security”, insisted the chef, who has 17 Michelin stars, after a meeting on Friday between the restaurant sector and President Emmanuel Macron.
“This statement has been heard by the government, it needs to be digested, but our leaders have recorded an awareness,” he continued.
According to Ducasse, French restaurants could reopen “Between June 2 and 20” if the coronavirus pandemic decreases.
The French government indicated that a decision on the reopening date will be made in late May.
The Culinary Institute of France, which defends the country’s gastronomic heritage and whose founder is Ducasse, asked in an open letter to the President of the Republic for a “partial lack of confidence in responsible restoration”.
“We are going in the right direction”, estimated the chef.
Cafes, bars and restaurants in France have been closed since March 15, and the situation in the sector “is catastrophic,” Ducasse warned.
