“It seems that we are going to have a much flatter peak, a much flatter curve in time and a long one, which is the objective that was sought with all the measures that have been implemented”, said this Friday the Minister of Health, Jaime Mañalich, in conversation with the Duna program at Punto de Radio Duna.

The Secretary of State addressed the situation in the country due to the coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19), which, according to the latest balance of the health authority, records 11,812 cases of contagion and a total of 168 deaths.

“It was sought, precisely, that we did not have at a certain time an excessive number of simultaneously seriously ill patients that would prevent us from giving them the medical care they required,” Mañalich continued at the instance.

He also announced that a “significant amount” of rapid tests will be applied as part of Minsal’s strategy. This, alluding to the new strategy and commitment of the government, which has been known as “new normality”, to face the new virus.

The tests will begin, according to Minister Mañalich, “Not before Wednesday” next week.

“We have a very important number of quick tests (…) and We are going to use them first in health workers, homes for the elderly and in prisons. In summary, in places where there is a higher risk of outbreaks that are very difficult to control, that is the strategy that we are going to deploy first regarding these tests, “he explained.

President Sebastián Piñera also referred to these quick tests in an interview with Bienvenidos, the morning of Canal 13. “Starting next week, we are going to start a program that is being discussed around the world. We are going to start a program that we hope will be massive in what is called rapid testing, which does not measure the presence of the virus, rapid testing is an immunoglobulin test measures the presence of antibodies ”.

On the other hand, Mañalich was asked about the possibility of opening the borders in a short time, to which he replied: “It is absolutely impossible to open air or land borders in a short time”

This, he specified, “Because we do not have any certainty of what is happening in neighboring countries, when they do much lower test volumes than ours.”
