More than a dozen people gathered Monday afternoon near Plaza Baquedano to protest. The objective of the protesters was to demonstrate their discomfort regarding the “new normal” that the government of the President Sebastián Piñera, in the midst of the coronavirus health crisis.
The scene – which also caused the arrest of some of the protesters due to the quarantine decreed in that area – caught the attention of some parliamentarians and opposition leaders, who issued a warning to the government: the measures taken by the Executive with respect to Covid-19 could reinvigorate the protests that arose after the social outbreak on October 18.
In this sense, from the center-left they stressed that initiatives such as gradual return of public officials to their jobs or the return to classes projected for May, which in the sector have qualified as “An inexplicable turn of the government” that “puts people’s lives at risk”, could cause such a level of annoyance in the citizenry that It could stimulate a new wave of protests.
“The people are outraged by the indolence of the government,” said Tuesday the Vice President of the Senate, Rabindranath Quinteros (PS), who also added that “we saw a group return to the‘ Plaza de la Dignidad ’because they see that the authority, once again, is not responding to their demands. Our fear is that this will continue to increase, which could increase Covid-19 victims. ”
Likewise, the parliamentarian maintained that some government authorities have made statements that “offend the intelligence of citizens,” such as the questioned phrase of the undersecretary of Health, Paula Daza, who pointed out that “probably” people can get together to “have a coffee” while maintaining social distancing measures. These episodes, explained the socialist, would be similar to some of the controversies that led to government authorities prior to the social outbreak, such as the call to “get up earlier” to use the Metro that the now former Minister of Economy, Juan Andrés Fontaine, or that older adults went to clinics to “do social life”, as the former undersecretary of Assistance Networks, Luis Castillo.
The same opinion was expressed by the PPD deputy, Ricardo Celis. “The government to date has done well in health, if we measure that in cases of deceased people or with fans, but when it intends to send children to school, that public services work normally or open malls, it irritates and generates a contrary response that can turn into mobilizations ”.
Meanwhile, other leaders, such as DC President Fuad Chahin and his pair of RD, Catalina Pérez, they qualified as “irresponsible” the fact of attending a protest in the context of a pandemic, however, assured that some of the Executive measures generate “uncertainty” in the citizenry.
“People are desperate, they do not know if they will make ends meet and that impotence and uncertainty are reflecting it in the plaza, but today we have to take care so that we can return to the streets soon to demand a fairer Chile,” he said. Pérez, while the Christian Democrat maintained that “it is irresponsible to participate in this type of demonstrations at this time, as well as it is irresponsible to start speaking so prematurely about new normality.
For the president of the PS, senator Álvaro Elizalde, “When the President went to take photos of Plaza Italia in the midst of the quarantine, he gave a contradictory signal to that of the health authorities ”.
For their part, in other sectors of the center-left they were more blunt about the protests during the pandemic.
