Close on the outside: A couple spent weeks at sea without knowing anything about the coronavirus

To not believe it. A Manchester-based couple spent 25 days on the high seas unaware of the fierce spread of the coronavirus pandemic, which has left the world on the ropes in the past month.

It is the story of Elena Manighetti and Ryan Osborne, who after leaving their jobs decided to buy a boat and travel around the world. They agreed to a contact system with their families and with a very clear rule: no bad news.

Thus, as they carried out the dream of almost everyone and crossed the Atlantic Ocean between the Canary Islands and the Caribbean, the Covid-19 pandemic began to spread throughout the world, leaving almost all countries on extreme alert.

Finally, after 25 days on the high seas, the couple planned to dock on a small island in the Caribbean and when they recovered the telephone signal, they suddenly found out that the world situation was more than complex.

Upon reaching the coast they were not allowed to enter a small island on French territory. Then they diverted the trip to Granada, and upon entering a 4G area they could only realize the magnitude of the coronavirus.

Only in San Vicente and with the travel history on a GPS, they could verify that they were isolated for almost a month and that they had not set foot in Italy, Elena’s country of origin, who only in that small country in the Caribbean could assimilate the ferocity with the that the coronavirus has hit in Italy.

For now, the woman assured the BBC that “we do not want to leave San Vicente for now, since there is no place open. We are here at the moment with the aim of leaving before the hurricane season begins in early June” .
