Director of Chile 21: “Paris is not fit to continue with the voice of this crisis, it transforms the balance of Covid-19 into a political ring”

“My days are incomparable with the complex days that health officials live.” That was one of the phrases that the Minister of Health, Enrique Paris, sent during the spokesman for the balance of Covid-19 in Chile.

On the occasion, the Secretary of State was again annoyed by the questions of the media, specialists and the opposition to the handling of the pandemic, which for the second day in a row exceeds the barrier of a thousand daily infections.

In this sense, while highlighting some articles and opinion columns from some media, he regretted the tone of others, noting that “I can’t help but think that in Chile not everyone is aligned behind the goal of saving lives.

The minister also read a letter that a patient who had coronavirus wrote to him in the form of gratitude and gave public support to the undersecretaries Paula Daza and Alberto Dougnac, adding that “the morale of the Ministry of Health is very high.” atmosphere of solidarity, coordination. We may be tired, but we keep our heads high and we are ready to continue fighting, “he added.

The minister’s tone did not go unnoticed and joins other interventions where he has been irritated and annoyed by the questions. Some analysts – such as Eduardo Vergara, executive director of Fundación Chile 21 – suggest that the secretary of state should exclude himself from these spokespersons.
“Definitely the Minister of Health Enrique Paris is not able to continue with the spokesman for this crisis. Perhaps he is tired as he says himself, but he transformed a vital information space into a political machine gun that today looks like a totalitarian propaganda pamphlet, ”assured Vergara.

In Vergara’s opinion, “the magnitude of what we are experiencing requires evidence and truthful information that help citizens to make better decisions to protect themselves and reduce risks.”

He added that, “the space that is granted daily by television, radio and digital media is based on the trust that the State will use it for purposes related to the good of the population. However, the minister transforms this valuable space into a political ring on a daily basis where, based on the victimization, he attacks those who qualify as adversaries, applauds those who applaud him and manipulates pain to gain empathy ”.

“We all know how complex it must be to administer the Government at this time and that mistakes are made, but we hope that mistakes are recognized and corrected, because the highest good is the health and lives of people at times when we have reached the worst time of the pandemic. Here the opposite happens, at all costs a failed approach is defended, “he said.

Along these lines, he warned that, “if the minister does not understand that communication is key and must be at the service of the country, the Government must remove the minister from the spokespersons and guarantee technical messengers. Otherwise, the media will simply end up reducing coverage gaps. There is no margin for personal taste ”.

For Vergara, this is the best evidence of the government’s mismanagement in the face of the crisis. “This helps to understand the catastrophic situation we are experiencing. The success and obsession to go down in history as those who handled the pandemic in a better way betrays them again. The communication of the government and its inability to implement protection policies, today have a significant fraction of the population navigating uncertainty and pain. Unlike the previous waves, this one has a clear political responsibility, it could have been avoided ”.
