On December 26, 2004, Southeast Asia was devastated by an earthquake measuring 9.1 degrees Richter, which generated waves up to 30 meters high, which destroyed cities, spas and they killed about 260 thousand people.

To this day, among all those dead was an Indonesian policeman named Abrip Asep, who was on duty that night in Aceh province and was swept away by the tsunami that was generated in the area after the earthquake.

As expected from that moment the authorities gave him as deceased, however, the situation changed last week, when Asep was reported to be admitted to a psychiatric facility.

As mentioned by the New Zealand Herald newspaper, citing local newspapers, the situation occurred by chance, since just this month a nephew of the victim, who was quite young when the tragedy occurred, had entered the psychiatric facility to work.

At that moment, they indicated, the young man noticed that the resident had a resemblance to a relative who had died during the tsunami, which was always remembered by the family. Because of this, one day he took a picture of her and sent it to a family chat.

After observing the photo, several of the members of that clan were shocked by this man, so they decided to visit him and even notified the police.

After some interviews with the officers, the mysterious inmate indicated that his name was Abrip Asep, which caused a commotion in the clan.

“I could not believe it, 17 years without news and we thought he had passed away, we did not know that he was still alive”, one of the relatives told local media.

However, from the psychiatric center they maintained that Abrip will not be able to leave the premises completely, because he still suffers from the consequences of what he lived 17 years ago.

For now, his relatives will be able to visit him once a week on the premises, due to the restrictions of the pandemic, although his finding already means a great advance for them.

“Although he is suffering from mental illness due to the tsunami, his family is very grateful to have found him alive.” exposed from the police.

It should be noted that the agency is currently investigating how, in 17 years, no local official notified Abrip Asep’s relatives about his existence.
