This Tuesday the work on the perimeter closure of the monument to the General Manuel Baquedano, thus leaving a white barrier between the public thoroughfare and the tomb of the unknown soldier.
With close to 3 meters high and weighing about 12 tons The perimeter closure resulted, putting an end to the work that began with the removal of the statue of General Baquedano on March 12.
The perimeter fence includes 34 steel bars with sheets of 5 millimeters thick, characteristics that would allow to withstand the impact of a vehicle at about 80 kilometers per hour.

After 93 years in the same place, Council of National Monuments (CMN) made the decision to remove the general’s statue after unknown persons tried to set fire to the base of the monument and, days later, tried to cut off the horse’s legs.
After the statue was removed, on March 14, the perimeter closure of the base of the monument continued and thus carry out tasks of diagnosis, protection and reinforcement of the plinth and the tomb of the unknown soldier.
Because the work was carried out between 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. the next day, the noise of welding and blows to metal cans generated annoyance among residents of the sector, a problem that lasted for two nights.
