It was not a good match for Unión Española. The team led by Jorge Pellicer had many problems to put together good football and be respected at home, against a complex rival like Independiente del Valle. Perhaps, for the same reason, the 1-0 victory against the Ecuadorian team is so valuable, because it could perfectly lose. However, despite the problems, he was able to prevail in the first leg of phase 2 of the Copa Libertadores.
It cost the cast of Santa Laura. In the first minutes, he had control and possession of the ball, while the visit waited in his field, without exerting greater pressure. With Carlos Palacios as the main driver and with Rubén Farfán as the deepest agent, the Reds tried to approach, although without much clarity.

This lack of precision made the team trained by Renato Paiva begin to dare. Joffré Escobar and lefty Lorenzo Faravelli demanded goalkeeper Diego Sánchez with danger. At 27 ‘, the Hispanic goalkeeper took a header from Richard Schunke that seemed to sneak in and, almost immediately, stopped a point-blank shot from Escobar.
Without much effort, the stranger was superior in the field of Independence. Of course, he failed in the last line, which could cost him dearly later. Before the break, the new reinforcement of Unión, the Uruguayan Ignacio Lemmo, wasted a good opportunity. The Uruguayan striker showed very little and would come out in the second half, after a foul in which he could be sent off.
After halftime, the trend was maintained, with the Ecuadorians controlling the actions and with the Chilean cast depending too much on what Palacios could do, who could be living his last days in Plaza Chacabuco, since Inter de Porto Alegre returned to the burden for him.
At 53, the clearest of the visit came, in a triple save that included a shot on the crossbar. At that point, the champion of the Copa Sudamericana 2019 deserved to be ahead.
And when least expected, came Beder Caicedo’s own goal. The midfielder of the negriazul team headed back the ball, in a corner kick executed by Lemmo, and put it in his own goal (56 ′). Undeserved, but goals must be scored. Union celebrated, while Martín Lasarte, coach of the Chilean team, took his notes in the box.
From that moment on, the procedure changed. Union calmed down and improved in terms of confidence, not so in the elaboration, while the finalist of the Copa Libertadores 2016 continued to sin from the same: lack of settlement and precision at the end of the play.
Pellicer took advantage of bringing in Alejandro Chumacero, another of his reinforcements. The result, however, was consummated. Union achieved a great triumph from the point of view of the scoreboard, because it won and kept its goal at zero, despite the fact that its rival was superior in the 90 minutes. He will arrive with an advantage for the rematch next Tuesday, in Quito. For now, they hug in Santa Laura.
