By order of the President of the Republic, Sebastian Piñera, and regarding the increase in violent events in La Araucanía, this Tuesday the Minister of the Interior, Rodrigo Delgado, led a coordination meeting in the area in which local government authorities participated together with the Carabineros commanders and the Investigative Police.
The meeting began after noon and lasted for several hours in offices of the Investigative Police in Temuco. In this context, Minister Delgado explained that Piñera asked him to improve coordination between the different institutions to advance in the fight against crimes in the area.
Later the general director of the Carabineros took the floor, Ricardo Yanez, who presented some figures that account for the complex situation that they have had to face during the last decade.
The boss of the uniformed police indicated that from 2010 to date 394 police officers have been injured in the context of the so-called rural violence, 38 of them with serious injuries.
In addition, he reported the 3 casualties that the institution has suffered from 2012 to date, all victims of armed attacks, General Yáñez indicated.
“We must further strengthen the professional and permanent work of both institutions, incorporating the Armed Forces with all their capabilities”he warned.
Specifically, Yáñez points out that the military institution contributes with armored means, planning consultancies, intelligence support and training of carabinieri with military techniques and tactics.
Along with this, the highest police authority reflected the discomfort felt within the Carabineros due to the judicial consequences they have had to face.
“There is a use of force that has been delegitimized. How do we deal with police operations in which, later, a Carabinero is questioned, detained, formalized and deprived of liberty? “, he asserted.
Likewise, he stated that despite the complexity of the deployment in the area, they will continue to do their duty.
“We have vehicles disabled by shooting with firearms from direct attacks. Even so, in the face of adversity, the Carabineros get on the same vehicles, knowing the risk they face, because our commitment is safety and protecting the community, ”he stressed.
Minister Delgado is expected to continue in the La Araucanía region in order to give a signal and advance the coordination that is needed to confront what President Piñera himself described this Monday as “terrorist acts.”
