The Mexican President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced this Thursday that he tested negative for covid-19 in a preliminary rapid test after it was confirmed on January 24 that he had contracted the disease.
“They did the antigen test this morning and it came out negative,” López Obrador said in a video broadcast on his social networks Thursday night.
The antigen test is one of the rapid tests that have been adopted all over the world, although it still has margins of error.
Moments before, the Undersecretary of Health, Hugo López Gatell, reported at a press conference that this Thursday samples were taken from the president for detailed analysis and are awaiting the results.
“Of course I still have to wait a few more days, but I’m already in good health. I am recovering well from the covid “said López Obrador.
The president spoke slowly, as is his custom, while he toured an area of the National Palace, the seat of government and where he resides. He appeared dressed in a dark suit and tie.
López Gatell said Wednesday that the 67-year-old president, the disease has passed “practically asymptomatic”, only with a slight fever and headache at the beginning.
The leftist leader is hypertensive and suffered a heart attack in 2013.
The president has been criticized for relativizing the effectiveness of the mask to prevent infections. He has only used it rarely, such as last July when he visited then-US President Donald Trump in Washington.
Mexico, with 126 million inhabitants, registers as of this Thursday about 1.9 million infections and 161,240 deaths.
