French police are holding a man under arrest Tuesday after discovering a head inside a box that was thrown out of his window in the southeastern coastal city of Toulon.
Passersby alerted police on Monday afternoon when they saw a fall from a window in the center of Toulon a box containing a severed heada police spokesman told AFP.
Shortly after the arrival of the police at the scene, a man leaned out of the window with his hands covered in blood and was detained by the police in his apartment. He was unarmed.
According to a police source, the head it could belong to one of the two people on the street who spent the night in the apartment.
The uniformed men had been alerted by a fight in that department in the evening from Sunday to Monday. Beyond the body of the victim and the detainee, they did not find anyone else in the apartment.
For the moment, law enforcement rule out a terrorist motivation in a case reminiscent of Professor Samuel Paty, beheaded by an Islamic extremist in October last year.
The mayor of Toulon, Hubert Falco, condemned this “unspeakable act” in a statement, adding that the motives for the crime were unknown.
