About 350 patients were transferred after the fire that affected the San Borja Arriarán Hospital during the morning, who were transferred to different healthcare centers.
The director of the Hospital announced that it is still unknown when the center will be operational again, which will be evaluated during the next few hours. Its interior was seriously affected, as evidenced by images captured from the inside by health personnel and firefighters.
The videos were disseminated on social networks, showing the equipment that was unusable.
At around 7:30 in the morning, Radio Bío Bío auditors reported that a fire was affecting the San Borja Hospital premises. At that time a column of smoke was observed and the first fire engines were arriving.
Relatives were in front of the hospital entrance, on the corner of Mariana de Gaete and Santa Rosa. After an hour, many still had no information about their patients.
The incident, according to the Minister of Health, Enrique Paris, would have happened in a warehouse of material and not in the hospital area.
Preliminarily one of the causes that is considered as the origin of the fire is an electrical failure, according to the North Central metropolitan regional prosecutor, Fernando Ruiz.
Jorge Wilhelm, director of the San Borja Hospital, explained that the patients were transferred to the Mother Son Clinics, Santa María, the San Juan de Dios Hospital, the Catholic Hospital and the Central Post Office ready to receive seriously ill patients.
Displacement of 27 intubated patients and three critically ill pediatric patients was prioritized. In addition to 28 Covid patients, of which 8 were on mechanical ventilation.
According to Alberto Dougnac, undersecretary of Healthcare Networks, around 350 patients were referred to other healthcare centers.
Through a press release, the San Borja Hospital presented that it will be evaluated when the healthcare center will be operational again. While Firefighters and Prosecutor’s Office investigates the possible causes of the accident.
