The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, 67 years old, announced this Sunday that he has covid-19 and that he is under “medical treatment.”
“I regret to inform you that I am infected with covid-19. The symptoms are mild but I am already under medical treatment. As always, I am optimistic. We will all move forward ”, he reported through social networks.
López Obrador, who has maintained most of his activities during the pandemic, appointed the Secretary of the Interior (Interior), Olga Sánchez, to replace him in his morning conference from Monday to Friday.
He, for his part, will be “pending public affairs from the National Palace.”
“For example, tomorrow I will take a call with President Vladimir Putin because, regardless of friendly relations, there is a possibility that they will send us the Sputnik V vaccine,” he said.
The leftist politician had three public activities over the weekend, the last of them on Friday morning in the state of San Luis Potosí (north).
López Obrador has had heart problems that forced him to be admitted to a private hospital in 2013; Besides that he suffers from hypertension.
Other leaders who have contracted COVID-19 are former US President Donald Trump, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, among others.
López Obrador does not wear a mask in public places and has only been seen wearing it when traveling by plane.
