The national director of the National Emergency Office (Onemi), Ricardo Toro, explained that it was an error of duplication of codes that caused the sending of the massive tsunami alarm after the earthquake that affected Antarctica.
In other words, the system provided by the Globalsystem company had two locations with the same code: Alto Hospicio, in the Tarapacá region, and Antarctica.
Therefore, when the operator selected this last territory in his interface to send the alert, The system also included Alto Hospicio for having the same code, incidentally including all the regions that are in between.
Thus, he ruled out that it was an error from the SAE system operator, and assured that now both towns have different codes to solve the problem.
For this reason, he announced that another report was requested from the company asking for the action plan for a definitive solution, correcting the codes and that a functional test was requested in the next 24 hours by sending a message to both locations.
A technical-legal audit of the Government will also be carried out to determine responsibilities under the contract and the fines that this would imply.
Said contract, he indicated, expires in June of this year, so “alternatives to optimize the system” will be explored. However, he highlighted that this platform has been used successfully in more than 50 opportunities over 7 years.
