During the afternoon of this Wednesday, the Institute of Public Health (ISP) ratified that in the country there are 15 people infected with the British variant of covid-19.
The director of the ISP, Heriberto García, affirmed that 330 suspicious people have already been tested, of which 15 tested positive for the variant.
12 of them belong to passengers of flight 6838 of Iberia from Europe to Santiago that arrived in the country on December 24, 2020, and 3 refer to close contacts of some of the passengers, according to García.
Isolation for infected
Likewise, the ISP director assured that people are under a strict isolation. “We isolate these people and the Seremi de Salud makes the respective traceability to reach the third generation,” Garcia said in the event that the virus has been transferred.
Cases are confirmed in the Metropolitan region
The mayor of La Pintana, Claudia pizarro, pointed out this morning that the British strain of the coronavirus had already reached the Metropolitan region.
The ISP confirmed this situation by saying, “There are four cases, three are from a complete family that traveled on the Iberia flight, and a close contact of them”.
How contagious is the variant?
“Still there is insufficient background to say how contagious it is. But beyond that we are going to have strains that are going to be around in Chile ”, specified the ISP.
However, he added “this is super important, because it was being said that the English variant was very contagious. We are not drawing conclusions about this. ”
