Former UDI president Pablo Longueira resigned this Saturday, for the second time since 2016, from the party which he helped found in 1983 and to which he returned only a few months ago when he announced his return to politics amid the constituent discussion.
In a letter addressed to the board of directors led by the deputy Javier Macaya and to the political commission of the pro-government community, the former helmsman also confirmed that finally he will not be a candidate for the Constitutional Convention.
In the letter, released today by the newspaper The Mercury, the former minister accused “a dark maneuver on the last day that the registration of candidacies was closed” in the internal elections of the UDI.
It should be remembered that Longueira lowered his candidacy for party president a day before the registration period expired, being replaced by the former Interior Minister Víctor Pérez, before the doubts generated by their inability to vote in the November primaries, as contained in the Servel records. This despite the fact that when the general electoral data contained in the same platform of the organism was reviewed, it did appear as authorized to vote.
In this Saturday’s letter, Longueira reported that after that episode, he began a consultation with constitutional lawyers to find out whether despite his inability to be accused in the SQM case it could be presented to the Constitutional Convention in the elections of next April 11.
According to the former senator, the experts’ recommendation that he asked was that he should participate as an independent, so that his affiliation to the UDI was not a reason for questioning. Thus, On January 6, he presented the request to invalidate his party affiliation in Servel; This matter was approved that same day by the organization, but a letter of support was requested from the helmsman Javier Macaya and the general secretary María José Hoffmann.
“I called the president immediately, but he did not answer the phone. I called other members of the management team to see that they send the letter urgently, which was immediately visible. Despite the insistence, it had not been sent until Friday at 7:00 pm, “Longueira said, motivating him to leave the store.
“After seven years of being away from politics, I believed that it was a duty to return to the public, thinking that I could contribute to a transcendental challenge for the country. Today I am clear that you do not think the same. Because of the above, I want to inform you that I will not be a candidate for the Constitutional Convention, “said the former senator.
Regarding the SQM case, Longueira defended his innocence: “In public life, I imposed ethical conduct far superior to the norms and laws.” He also accused an “image murder” by the Public Ministry.
