This Monday morning, Chilevisión and CNN Chile condemned the detention by the Carabineros of a cameraman in the middle of a demonstration in Santiago, and described it as “unjustified” and “arbitrary.”
The event occurred in the context of the surrender of the University Transition Test, at a time when students from the Coordinating Assembly of Secondary Students (ACES) protested outside the Ministry of Education.
Police officials arrived at the scene and reportedly detained nine people, including a CNN Chile / Chilevisión cameraman who was working.
In a statement, from the channel they indicated that they regret and repudiate “the detention of a member of our team, the cameraman Álex Cuadra Toledo, in the performance of his duties.”
They affirmed that, with the action, Carabineros personnel “have unjustifiably obstructed the exercise of freedom of information, preventing by force the work of a professional of the press.”
They also pointed out that all the records, even those that were going live, “evidence as unjustified and arbitrary” the arrest, accusing that it was humiliating treatment against the worker.
Cuadra, according to the report, was stripped of his recording camera in full labor and was forcibly reduced, handcuffed, and taken to a police vehicle.
“We express our protest against this procedure (…) which violates both the basic guarantees that should exist for professionals of the press and the right of public opinion to be informed,” they closed.
