The final deadline to form a unitary list in the Constitutional Convention advances: opposition parties meet again today without the CP

“If the opposition is divided into 4 lists, the right could obtain more than 50% of the constituents.” This was the warning that a group of personalities grouped in the Single List Committee for Approval made last December 29 to give the presidents of the opposition political parties a slap on the wrist. The reason, to achieve a unitary list and not suffer a defeat in the next elections of the Constitutional Convention.

Following the call of the committee, the helmsmen of the Constituent Unit (PS, PPD, PR, DC, PRO and Ciudadanos) together with the presidents of RD and Social Convergence, as well as independent leaders, met privately yesterday for almost two hours, in a meeting called by the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT).

According to the slogan El Mercurio, the host was the president of the CUT, Bárbara Figueroa, and the meeting had the participation of all opposition parties with the exception of the community of the leader herself, the Communist Party, the Social Green Regionalist Federation and Communes .

And it is that although there is a lot of agreement on the formula of forming a single list, which includes 50% of independents and 50% of militants —with programmatic approaches—, not all are convinced yet and the absence —especially of the communists— does not it was the best signal for the block.

“I said at the CUT meeting that it is necessary to persevere in a unitary list. We can compete in other areas, but not in the list for the Constitutional Convention, because the Constitution of the future is at stake and there is no second round. I proposed a unitary list 50 % of parties, 50% independent and social movements. There was progress and it continues on Saturday, “said the president of the PPD, Heraldo Muñoz, confirming that there will be another meeting tomorrow to analyze the matter again.

Álvaro Elizalde, president of the PS, added that what is at stake is too important for the future of Chile. “For this reason, we will insist on a unitary list of all progressive forces, social and independent leaders. We hope that those who could not participate today will join this effort,” he said.

From DC, his helmsman, Fuad Chahín, stated that, in his opinion, there are two possibilities: “a single list or two complementary ones.”

“We have always said that we believe that two complementary lists are possible and that it is also the best means to achieve the objective. In any case, we will not be a stop stone at any time in the event that there is agreement for a single list, the important thing is that there is little time left, ”argued Chahín.

In the Broad Front, where an agreement on constituent matters with the Communist Party and the FRVS had already been concluded, despite the absence of Commons, they valued the instance of dialogue.

“We have said that we will not give up our efforts to unify and today we have taken another step in that direction. The call for organizations, independents and all parties to a single list, with common proposals and the push for a regulation that guarantees citizen participation is essential, and we have reiterated that will from the Broad Front and Democratic Revolution, “he said. RD President Catalina Pérez, assuring that attending this meeting gives a signal to the PC that “it is necessary to open up and not cornered.” In fact, different leaders questioned the absence of the PC after the meeting, which was classified as “unpresentable ”.

The Green Social Regionalist Federation said that it was not invited to the meeting and that it became aware of the meeting yesterday morning.

The CUT’s effort is in line with the letter that 49 deputies sent yesterday asking for unity for the April elections. Through a letter called “Opposition political unit to win tomorrow,” forty-nine opposition parliamentarians called on the center-left parties to agree on a unitary list of candidates for the Constitutional Convention, including independents.

In addition, with the objective of ensuring a quorum of 2/3 within the Constitutional Convention, more than 200 regional, community, neighborhood leaders, deputies, mayors and emblematic figures of the Christian Democracy adhered to the call for the Single Approval List , by sending a letter to the Executive Committee of this initiative with the list of adherents.

January 11. That day expires the term to register the lists of candidates for the Constitutional Convention.

PC President: “For many the anti-communist campaign should be shameful”

Guillermo Tellier told El Siglo that a couple of days ago he was in person with the top leaders of the CUT at its headquarters. According to the helmsman of the Communist Party, on that occasion, they raised the possibility of having union leaders on their lists. “To which I answered affirmatively,” he said.

But at that meeting, according to Tellier’s account, “there was no talk of a meeting for a single list.” “On what there was a coinciding position – he added – was on the possibility that, having two lists, it could reach agreements regarding constitutional matters, they were especially interested in agreements on labor matters.”

The president of the PC clarified that the CUT was only the host of the meeting that was coordinated by “other sectors”. In that sense, he revealed that he was not invited by the coordinators of the meeting. Asked about the reasons, Guillermo Tellier said: “I imagine it is because we have made the decision to participate with a transforming list of the neoliberal system and closer to the social world and its demands.”

In any case, Tellier assured that they were not the only opposition party that did not attend or that was not invited. “Also, as far as I know, in that meeting there was no agreement or unanimity on the matter dealt with. So to load the dice to the Communist Party does not seem to me,” he said.

The boss of the PC finally declared that you don’t have to be very insightful to see the amount of maneuvers that are behind this and that “they will continue.” “I think that for many the anti-communist campaign should be shameful. But I trust that there are sectors that see that behind this is the purpose of maintaining forces that have coexisted and accepted the model in force,” he concluded.
