Today could be an important day for Chilean soccer and, especially, the national team: the future of Reinaldo Rueda is defined.
After the offer received from Colombia to take the reins of the combined ‘coffee grower’, the DT did not hide his desire to change of scene and, from the ANFP, they pushed him to leave La Roja.
Therefore, the debate began about what was better: to open the doors for ‘Rei’ to leave Chile or to support his work and ask him to continue in the ‘team of all’?
The truth is that the governing body of Chilean football is not happy with the performance of Rueda at the helm of La Roja. With 4 points after four Qualifying dates, the sixth position in the table towards Qatar 2022 and the poor image shown against Venezuela ended up stoning the glimpses of good play shown against Uruguay and Peru.
And, for his part, the Colombian strategist is not happy in our country in the face of the constant criticism from the press – sometimes justified, sometimes not – and the null support of the ANFP for his work.
With the imminent departure of Rueda from the national team, since his close circle stated that you will pack your bags even if you don’t make it to the Colombian National Team, the question arises: who will reach the bank of Chile?
Dance of names
Known the intentions of ‘Triple R’, the names for his replacement did not take long to appear. One of the first was Ariel holan, current technician from Universidad Católica.
His good performance with the crusaders aroused the interest of the ANFP, who met with UC leaders and the DT agent to learn their terms.
However, from a sector of the governing body of Chilean soccer they affirmed that Holan does not convince at all because of “a character issue, he is considered a bit arrogant.”
Almost in unison, he began to appear as a candidate Hernan Crespo, current Defense and Justice coach, Coquimbo Unido’s next rival in the Copa Sudamericana.
The Argentine team is controlled by the same group that manages Unión La Calera, therefore, joining threads, it does not cost much to generate a closeness with national football.
However, Crespo himself has stated that he is not interested in the rumors that link him to Chile and that, for the moment, he only focuses on his work with Varela’s ‘Falcon’.
Movements and interest
As the days went by, another DT who gained strength to reach La Roja was José Néstor Pékerman. The former Colombian technician meets the profile sought by the ANFP and his passage through our country, in the lower divisions of Colo Colo, fueled the rumors of his arrival.
In addition to his World Cup qualifications with the ‘coffee growers’ and Argentina, another point that brought him closer is that, according to La Cuarta, he chose the ex-flyer Esteban Cambiasso to be his main collaborator to arrive.
“The ‘Cucho’ currently resides in Milan, so he would form a close link with the two main stars of the national team: Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sánchez,” they stressed.
Shortly after, one who expressed his interest in taking over La Roja was the Uruguayan Gustavo poyet, once a Chelsea and Tottenham player.
“I am interested and motivated (…) I have seen a lot of Chilean football in the last time, to which one adds knowing the journey of its figures who act abroad. It has a lot of potential to qualify for the World Cup, ”the Uruguayan told El Mercurio.
The last one that began to sound strongly is one that was already in the ‘team of all’: Sebastian Beccacece.
Jorge Sampaoli’s former assistant at La Roja will leave Racing and, from the ANFP, they affirmed that “it is a name that is going to be analyzed.”
As a coach, ‘Beca’ did not do well at the Universidad de Chile and Independiente, although it left good feelings in Defense and Justice and now in the ‘Academia’.
