This morning, Mexican media reported on the death of one of the leading figures in Latin American music, the composer Armando Manzanero (85). The musician was intubated due to a serious coronavirus infection.

Manzanero’s career is impressive, having more than 400 songs within his repertoire, of which more than 50 became hits in more than four decades of working with various interpreters from his country.

There is no doubt that one of his most notable achievements was with the singer Luis Miguel, with whom in 1991 he composed the album called Romance, one of the most emblematic of his career and containing two boleros written by Manzanero: I don’t know about you and Miss you.

That same decade, the singer reverted two other hits that had been written by the so-called “Maestro de la Música” in Mexico: Are we a couple and Under the table.

However, and like many friends in life, after the success that both had at that time, their paths separated and they never again had projects together.

Without going any further, Manzanero had made this clear during an interview he gave in October 2017 to the Spanish newspaper El País, in which he stated that he had never received a message or a call from the “Sol de México” again.

At that time, the composer even lashed out with harsh terms towards his colleague, who was preparing to premiere the series that he himself had promoted for Netflix.

“It is easier for an elephant to enter through the eye of a needle than for Luis Miguel to do something for others”, stated at the time.

“He left a man who is great like the singer Alejandro Fernández in a bad way. If he did that … What can you expect from him? He went crazy. There are people who do not know gratitude. I don’t want to talk about him, but I think what a shame, “he added.

All these statements came to light after he was asked whether Luis Miguel was going to be present at the tribute that various artists had prepared for him at the National Auditorium in Mexico City, a matter that did not occur.

Criticism of the series

Already in 2018, Manzanero again evidenced criticism of Luis Miguel. At that time his judgments were focused on the series that had been made on the singer’s life.

It should be remembered that, in chapter 12, the production recalled how the preparation of the album entitled Romance, in which Manzanero had a fundamental participation.

According to the fiction, that work did not have good prospects for success on the part of the label and Luis Miguel’s team, because the songs were rather old and it was about reaching a young audience. However, and despite all the objections, the album was carried out and it was a total success.

Through a video on YouTube Manzanero, who was personified in the series, argued that the plot had lied about the work he did that year with the singer.

Manzanero in the Luis Miguel series

“I started creating the bolero album project two years before it was made, but I never told him: ‘Oh, Micky for God’s sake, no one is going to want to hear those songs!’ Those are some bullshit (nonsense) that they put in the series, I don’t know if it is to sell more or for whatever, “he said.

Also, in that record the composer maintained that Luis Miguel’s career was on the rise due to the successes of that album.

Regarding the series, Manzanero said that he was never invited to participate and that he did not see it, assuring that “I do not like gossip”
