Nicolás Massú spoke about the past of his maternal family and said that his grandparents were in Auschwitz, the largest torture and extermination complex of the Second World War.
In conversation with the ITF page, the Chilean spoke of his past contextualizing the mental strength that characterizes him.
“When you work for a dream, you can fulfill it. For us South Americans it is difficult, we don’t have many local tournaments, so we have to travel a lot and very far from home, from our families. But since I was young I tried to stay positive and to be mentally stronger than the rivals. I always wanted to win, “he said.
About his maternal grandparents, he explained that “They lived in the Second World War, they were in Auschwitz. My grandfather was the one who introduced me to tennis. For many years he supported me by taking me and going to find the club ”.
“My grandmother is 94 years old and she still has her concentration camp number tattooed on her wrist. They explained to me what they had experienced there, so I have that strength for them. If they could survive that, how can I not be positive when I play tennis? “ he pondered.
Evolution with Thiem
The Chilean is today one of the best coaches on the circuit. Together with Dominic Thiem they have managed to rise in the ranking and even threaten the ‘Big Three’.
In that sense, it recognizes that “One of the goals was to improve his game on the hard court. And now I don’t know if he has better results on clay or on a hard court. He has a great level on both surfaces, but we need to improve on grass ”.
About the beginning of the relationship, Massú assumed that “we didn’t know each other much (with Thiem), but we talked a lot and we adapted to each other. We travel a lot together and think about tennis in a similar way. When I started working with him, I knew he would improve on the hard court with a few minor adjustments to his game.
