Cybercrime has increased its work this year due to the pandemic, due to the use of the Home Office and Internet sales, platforms such as WhatsApp have become more essential for the current market.
That is why hackers are even more focused on social networks, but especially on the instant messaging app, since it is one of the most used on the planet and the most popular to communicate today.
From Spain they report on a new method in which these criminals try to steal WhatsApp accounts, but in this case it is not a technical way, but rather something simple and fast.
Whatsapp account theft method
The new deception to users who indicate Spanish media, consists of impersonating a contact of the victim and then writing the following message:
“Hi, sorry, I sent you a 6-digit code by SMS by mistake, can you please pass it on to me? it is urgent”.
In that case, the user will receive a message with a 6-digit code, this is totally true. The problem is that sharing these numbers is extremely dangerous, since they would be registering the user’s account on another mobile, which means that the hacker will have access to everything.
Here we must make something very clear and that is that for nothing in the world you should share your WhatsApp codes with other people, since the security of your account could be compromised and stolen by another person.
WhatsApp warns its users saying “never share your WhatsApp verification code with other people. If someone is trying to take over your account, to do so, they will need the verification code that was sent by SMS message to your phone. Without that code “No user who tries to verify your number will be able to complete the verification process and use the number in WhatsApp. This means that you remain in control of your WhatsApp account.”
