On Tuesday afternoon, from the Puente Alto commune, President Sebastián Piñera promulgated the law that creates the replacement of Sename: the National Service for the Specialized Protection of Children and Adolescents, also called “Better Childhood Service.”
According to government figures, the institution will serve approximately 250 thousand children, girls and adolescents (NNA) per year, and will be in charge of the reintegration and reparation of vulnerable minors.
In the event, Piñera highlighted the importance of the family in the development of a minor and affirmed that the separation of a child and his clan “must be something exceptional”, only “when it is not possible to keep them together”.
“To avoid this separation we have sought include families of vulnerable children among the people who are going to receive care and help from this new Better Childhood Service, ”Piñera said.
After that, the President assured that the Government has strengthened the accompaniment programs, increased resources and worked to expand the offers.

Added to this, he asserted that they work for solve the problem of waiting lists, made up of thousands of minors.
“When reunification is not possible, foster care will be privileged before going to the residences,” said Piñera, specifying that the figure of host families will be promoted before opting for the above alternative.
Thus, only when there are no more scenarios to explore, a vulnerable minor would be sent to one of the new residences devised, which differ from the criticized Direct Administration Residential Centers (Cread), promised Piñera.
