In the opposition they recognize that they have no chance of imposing on the right if they do not join forces. And that is why, in view of the election of the members of the Constituent Convention, Progressive Convergence (PS, PPD and PR) summoned leaders of the PRO, the Liberal Party and independents to sign a letter where they compromise a unitary list. They also included people from the world of cultures: Horacio Salinas, Jorge Baradit and the Chiloe poet Rosabetty Muñoz.
“The future of Chile is at stake in the development of the new Constitution,” says the letter entitled “Call for Unity to the Political Forces”, where they ask to put differences aside and aim to reach an agreement on January 11 , legal deadline to register candidacies.
Given this, the helmsman of the PPD, Heraldo Muñoz, acknowledged that “unity always costs, always has a cost”, but stressed that it is the only way. At the time of definitions, and as has happened on previous occasions, the right will be ordered, which in the opinion of the former foreign minister, would translate into a majority in the body that will draft the new Fundamental Charter.
“We do not intend to give lessons to anyone. There have been other calls and we joined them. We believe that the time has come to sit down at the table and say: ‘these are the names and why we did not reach a single list'”, he stressed, evidencing that the door is open for everyone, PH, Frente Amplio and PC included, who have also urged the desired “unity”.
For his part, Álvaro Elizalde, president of the PS, said that “it is essential to build a large majority, committed to profound changes on the basis of a substantive programmatic understanding that guarantees a transition from a subsidiary system to a social and democratic state of rights.”
Although from the sector they affirmed that in the list that could be decided the diversity of the “Approve” must be represented, they explained that in this instance more “related” actors met, and that, for the same reason, there are no faces of DC subscribing this call. From the phalanx, in any case, they have also expressed their hope to avoid dispersion, but they have done so separately.
