By 35 votes in favor, 4 against and 2 abstentions, the Senate this day ratified Mario Carroza as the new Minister of the Supreme Court, replacing Lamberto Cisternas.
The voting in the courtroom of the judge’s name has been in charge of various inquiries regarding human rights, such as the Caravana de la Muerte case, La Serena episode and the crime of the UDI senator, Jaime Guzmán, occurred after the Constitution Commission approved unanimously his appointment.
The four votes against the appointment made by President Sebastián Piñera came from UDI senators, Iván Moreira, Jacqueline van Rysselberghe and José Miguel Durana. Plus independent Kenneth Pugh.
Precisely from the unionism they had expressed their objections to the name of Carroza precisely because of its role in cases related to human rights and that they involved the military in cases against humanity.
After the vote, the Minister of Justice, Hernán Larraín declared that “with a very large majority the Senate approved the proposal made by the President based on the quina drawn up by the Supreme Court to elect and designate Mario Carroza as Minister of the Supreme Court . It is a great decision, because the judge Carroza is a man of integrity, an equanimous judge, of consistent arguments and a very coherent line of judicial work ”.
And he added that “he has stood out for his career, in the field of human rights and for carrying out, with responsibility and seriousness, complex trials, such as the murder of Senator Jaime Guzmán. The Supreme Court has won a great judge in its ranks. “
Once the news of his appointment to the Supreme Court was known, Judge Mario Carroza declared that “this stage is not the culmination of my career, but the beginning of a job to continue serving the country from the Highest Court.”
In this sense, the magistrate assured that “in this position I will advocate for the elaboration of the consensus of the judicial career, the disciplinary regime and appointments. At the same time, I will urge to deepen a justice seen from the perspective of Human Rights and gender equality ”.
“A justice that takes time is not justice. I will contribute my efforts and knowledge so that each citizen of this country, who requires it, has access to a transparent and fair judicial process ”, he concluded.
