Totally opposite environments were experienced this morning in the parties that make up the Constituent Unit. While the Christian Democracy, a community that became the great winner of the non-legal municipal primaries this Sunday, celebrated its results, in parties such as the PPD -despite the public statements of its helmsman, Heraldo Muñoz– They recognized that they did not have the best performance after being surpassed in triumphs by the Radical Party.
According to reports from the communities, the DC prevailed in 28 primaries, the PS in 16, the PR in 13, the PPD in 10, the PRO 3 and Ciudadanos in none. The elections came after the sector failed to agree on legal primaries for these elections before November 29. Here are the keys to understanding the results and their effects.
“We probably didn’t win on Twitter, but we are winning at the polls.” With those words this morning the president of the Christian Democrats celebrated, Fuad chahin, the triumph of 27 of the 53 candidates in the non-legal primaries of the Constituent Unit this Sunday.
Escorted by some of the winners of emblematic communes, such as La Reina (Sara Campos), Valparaíso (Marcelo Barraza) and Lo Espejo (Carlos Gardel), the helmsman referred to what he called a “sign” of the recovery of the DC .
The community had already managed to prevail within the bloc in the regional governors’ primaries on November 29. In those elections, the party led by Fuad Chahin won in seven of the fifteen regions in which they participated.
In this sense, from the DC they convey that the result exceeded their expectations, although both from that party and from the rest of the Constituent Unit assured that the triumph of the Christian Democrats was “expected.”
However, From the DC they maintain that this would be another demonstration that they are no longer “isolated” within the opposition and that the strategy that the directive has followed has been successful in consolidating the community within the center-left.
Likewise, the victory gives another air to the helmsman of the party, who today is seeking his re-election as president of the community.
The party led by Alvaro ElizaldeAs in the regional governors’ primaries of November 29, it positioned itself as the second force in the Constituent Unit, managing to win with 17 of the 49 candidates who registered.
Despite that, within socialism some sectors looked with concern at the broad support that the candidates of the Christian Democrats received and they resented the “modest” results of their community.
From the directive, in fact, they admitted that it hurt them to have lost communes like Pudahuel, where the PRO candidate Mónica Sánchez and not Jaime Romero ended up triumphing, the letter of continuity with which the PS sought to replace the historic Johnny Carrasco, who has led the mayor’s office since 1992 and today is affected by the law that limits re-election. There, the Paris store 873 lost by just over 40 votes.
In that area, in any case, some in the community resented the “not very active role” that the current mayor would have had. “It’s angry,” says a leader, who highlights that Carrasco did not participate in the activities linked to the elections or endorsed the party’s letter, Luis Basaez.
The same sources indicate that they could also have been imposed in Quilpué, where they currently have Mayor Mauricio Viñambres in office. In that primary, the Christian Democratic candidate, Cristian Cárdenas, ended up being the opposition card in the face of the April elections.
Despite everything, in the previous elections this Sunday, from the PS they assured that they did not have great aspirations, in fact, they spoke of between 10 and 20 wins. This, they say in the community, given that the areas of greatest relevance to the party had already been secured during the municipal negotiation with the rest of the Constituent Unit and, furthermore, because they had registered candidates in areas where the other parties chose not to compete as is the case of Arica or Machalí, among other.
In that sense, in the community they assure that they will end up competing in a number of communes similar to the one they have historically done.
Joyful accounts were taken out this morning within the Radical Party. On Sunday, December 13, the community won three of the first four primaries held by the Constituent Unit and yesterday it managed to win another ten.
A good result for one of the “medium” parties of the bloc, who even managed to displace the PPD as the third electoral force in these elections of the coordination. The community led by the former foreign minister, Heraldo Muñoz, prevailed in 10 communes in total and participated in 34 primaries, while the radicals only took part in 32.
From the PPD they recognized that, although they remained within their expectations, the result was not “celebrable”. In any case, the party stressed that they achieved triumphs in regional capitals such as Chillán, as well as in relevant communes such as Buin.
In that sense, they argued that those 10 communes represented places where the center-left would have “good chances” for the April 11 elections.
From the PR, meanwhile, they assured that their results surprised the bloc and transmitted that their triumph showed a “political and electoral vitality” of the community. They also affirmed that this gave the community more ground to face the next electoral challenges.
Despite all this, the PPD helmsman made a positive assessment of the results of his community. “We have had very important triumphs, starting with Buin, but also Chillán, Pirque, Til-til and outside many important communes. We have obtained around 90 thousand votes, around 18 thousand and that also represents a good balance ”, he said.
They only participated in three communes and lost in all. The candidates of the Broad Front in The Queen, Providencia and Pudahuel They could not prevail this Sunday against the letters of the Constituent Unit and the rest of the center-left.
Two of the conglomerate’s candidates were from the Democratic Revolution, a community that has suffered an electoral decline since the November 29 regional governor primaries. On that day, RD surprisingly lost in the metropolitan against the candidate of Commons, Karina Oliva.
In this sense, the candidates of the bloc for La Reina (Catalina Rubio) and for Pudahuel (José Escobar) were defeated by the letter of the DC, Sara Campos and of the PRO, Mónica Sánchez, respectively. In Providencia, meanwhile, the Commons candidate, Felipe Parada, lost to the independent Verónica Pardo.
In the conglomerate they recognize that it was not a good result, although they assure that their candidacies in those communes were gambling. “You never worked to win”, supports a bloc leader. Likewise, from the DR they maintain that the result is due to the “low participation” in general.
However, from other communities of the block they assure that the result means that the “RD brand” continues to decline and, even, they argue that it would have been a “mistake” to raise candidates in Pudahuel and Providencia.
