The U goes back to the days of Caputto

Universidad de Chile was a mix of good and bad things against Huachipato. Rafael Dudamel’s team started better than its rival. He was in control of the ball and the midfield. On the left, Jean Beausejour hurt every time he went up, while Pablo Aránguiz and Walter Montillo were a problem for the steel defense.

La Ardilla opened the account with a right hand from outside the area. He was lucky, because his shot was diverted by Ignacio Tapia, which upset goalkeeper Gabriel Castellón. So far, deserved.

However, Gustavo Florentín’s team recalled the worst moments of Hernán Caputto’s U. He advanced the lines, went up in search of the tie and took the ball from the Blues, who fell back after the initial goal and took their foot off the accelerator, just as they did with the previous coach after taking the lead.

Walter Mazzantti took advantage of Aránguiz’s fearsome mark and in a good play enabled César Valenzuela, who received only between the student centers to beat the local goal.

The Venezuelan’s pupils were not even recovering from the tie when the big mistake of goalkeeper Fernando de Paul came, who lost control of the ball in the air, while cutting an innocent center. Paraguayan Cris Martínez took advantage of the ruling and put the surprise in the National Stadium.

The defensive solidity that had been praised so much by the U, against Audax Italiano and La Serena, seemed to melt against the steelmakers. And although they claimed a lack of the steel striker, the goal was completely legitimate.

With the score 1-2 down, the university picture was blurred. Dudamel yelled at Osvaldo González to come out, to move forward, and asked the team to play faster, speed up the game.

However, if it is not for Montillo or Aránguiz this U shows very little. Only when the ball passes through one of them is the blue game clear. Thus came equality. The midfielder formed in Unión Española opened for Matías Rodríguez, who crossed for Joaquín Larrivey. The Argentine took advantage of Castellón’s weak intervention to put his foot in and decree the 2-2 near the end of the first half.

The second fraction had less action, especially after the early replacement of Montillo, who came out with an ice pack. Similarly, Larrivey and Fernando Cornejo wasted excellent options in front of the steel arc, which could well mean the three points and climb the table.

While Dudamel was betting on taking care of his figures for Wednesday’s classic against the leader and current two-time champion Universidad Católica, since he also removed Aránguiz and Larrivey, the steelmakers did the same with Mazzantti, Valenzuela and Juan Sánchez Sotelo, with which they lost a lot on offense.

In any case, the responsibility lay with the U. And although he made merits in the second half to take the victory, he was unable to achieve. For now, Dudamel’s team remains unconvinced.
