A beekeeper from Tomé claimed to have had to burn more than two million contaminated bees, according to him, as a result of a fumigation by the Arauco forest. The case was reported to the Prosecutor’s Office through a complaint for environmental crime.

A damage not only economic but also environmental is denouncing the businessman Roberto Montero, who stated that at the end of November, the Arauco company used herbicides and pesticides that contaminated the hives it has on its property for the production of honey.

As explained by the beekeeper, the forester did not comply with the obligation to report on the fumigation in the Rafael sector, just 400 meters from where his bees are, which immediately began to die.

But in addition, Montero argued that the damage is maintained, because it first affects the adult bee, then the larvae and ends up collapsing the hive, so decided to burn an important part of them and the up to 2.5 million bees inside it, which resulted in a significant job loss.

After not being able to file a complaint with the Carabineros, the businessman was advised by the lawyer Andrés Durán, who presented a complaint for an environmental crime, since the pollinators would have been harmed.

From Arauco, pointed out that the products used in fumigations are duly certified, ensuring that the application was carried out in an area 400 meters from the hives, with a road that separates both farms, applying the chemicals directly to the ground without there being any evidence that proves the damage reported.
