What happened?
A health worker in Alaska, United States, had a severe allergic reaction after receiving the coronavirus vaccine from PfizerSymptoms that appeared within minutes and forced her to spend the night in the hospital.
According to what was reported by the New York Times, the official had no history of allergies and still had the same reaction observed in two other people who were inoculated in the United Kingdom, who presented egg rejection and some medications.
The case
Last Tuesday, the worker had an anaphylactic reaction that began 10 minutes after receiving the vaccine at Bartlett Regional Hospital in Juneau. He experienced a rash in the face and torso, shortness of breath and an elevated heart rate.
The doctor Lindy jones, medical director of the hospital’s emergency department, said the official first received an injection of epinephrine, a standard treatment for severe allergic reactions. Their symptoms subsided but then reappeared and they were treated with steroids and a drip of epinephrine.
When doctors tried to stop the drip, her symptoms reappeared once again, so the woman was transferred to the intensive care unit, where she was observed overnight and had the drip removed on Wednesday morning.
Dr. Jones said the woman was feeling fine, was still excited about the vaccine and was scheduled to be discharged later Wednesday.
What is an anaphylactic reaction?
Anaphylaxis can be life-threatening, with shortness of breath and drops in blood pressure that usually occur minutes or even seconds after exposure to a food or medicine. It can also occur with exposure to a substance such as latex.
The vaccine and allergies
Although the Pfizer vaccine was shown to be safe and about 95% effective in a clinical trial with 44,000 participants, the Alaska case will likely heighten concerns about possible side effects.
The experts described the woman’s symptoms as potentially mortal and they said they could lead to calls for stricter guidelines to ensure recipients are carefully monitored for adverse reactions.
The vaccine comes with information advising that treatment should be available in the event of a rare anaphylactic event.
From the United Kingdom they updated that there is a third patient who had a “possible allergic reaction”, but without specifying more about the case.
