The Public Health Institute (ISP) approved this Wednesday the “emergency” use in Chile of the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BionTech against covid-19 in people over 16 years of age.
The decision was made after a group of 22 specialists will review the information provided by both pharmaceutical companies, and approved the option of granting them the respective permit on national soil.
The deputy director of the ISP, Heriberto García, explained that the vaccine can already be considered approved, so the Ministry of Health can already work on a mass immunization plan.
“Mass vaccination of the entire population has just been approved according to what is defined by the National Immunization Program,” he clarified.
Along the same lines, he stressed that it was evaluated whether the country had the logistical conditions to receive the vaccine, and it was concluded that “Chile is prepared to receive vaccines.”
“Today the committee of experts analyzed super relevant matters, as if Chile is prepared in logistics to receive vaccines, and yes Chile is prepared ”, he claimed.
García indicated that the Minsal can now import the vaccines to Chile – despite the fact that the decree would be published between today or tomorrow – and that It is up to the Secretary of State to define which population groups will be vaccinated and when the process will begin.
With this visa in hand, all that remains is to wait for the arrival of the first shipment of some 50,000 vaccines and for one of the most anticipated milestones of the pandemic to be met: the start of vaccination in Chile.
According to the trials carried out by Pfizer / BionTech, the vaccine developed in recent months is 90% effective and began to be applied in the United States this week and in the United Kingdom for more than 10 days.
