The president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden to nominate the former presidential candidate Pete buttigieg as Secretary of Transportation, the US media report.
If confirmed and then approved by the Senate, CNN reports, he would become the first member of the LGBT community to join the presidential cabinet.
Buttigieg previously served as mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and ran as a Democratic candidate in this year’s election.
Buttigieg, 38, was a revelation in the election campaign, going from being the mayor of that small town to a national media sensation, despite the fact that his campaign lost steam and he withdrew before “Super Tuesday” to free the way for Biden.
Known as “Mayor Pete”, he made an impact on the campaign with his gifted student profile that combines his credentials as a veteran of the Afghanistan War with a groundbreaking style, which led him to openly present himself as homosexual when entering politics, after having kept his orientation a secret during his military period.
“Pete’s nomination is a milestone in the decades-long struggle to ensure that the LGBT population is represented in our government and its impact will reverberate far beyond the department that he will lead,” said the Victory Institute, which militates for that this group has higher representation quotas.
Upon receiving Buttigieg’s support, Biden said excitedly that he reminded him of his late son Beau, noting that for him this was the greatest compliment he could give someone.
