The Minister of Foreign Affairs (RR.EE.), Andres Allamand, addressed the situation of the Chinese fishing fleet sailing in Chilean waters, in the middle of a ceremony to commemorate 50 years of diplomatic relations between Chile and the Asian giant.

This Monday the General Directorate of the Maritime Territory and Merchant Marine (Directemar) of the Navy confirmed the entry of 77 ships to the SAR area of national responsibility, of which 11 were passing through the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of our country.

Asked about it, Chancellor Allamand said that the information he handled was that to date there were no admissions to the Chilean EEZ, but if it is verified, all the corresponding diplomatic measures will be taken.

“If it is verified that this entry has definitely occurred, it is an illegal entry and of course it will be the reason for the corresponding diplomatic actions,” said the minister.

“We are directly monitoring the situation so that this entry into our jurisdictional waters does not materialize, we also have coordination with other Pacific countries, particularly with Colombia, Peru and Ecuador in this matter,” he added.

The Navy reported that it continues to monitor the actions of these vessels that so far they have not carried out illegal fishing, which is why they have not breached any regulations that warrant Chilean intervention.

On their journey to catch squid, practically every year in spring or summer, vessels enter the EEZ by way of crossing the Strait of Magellan and reaching the South Atlantic, but not for fishing in jurisdictional waters.
