The repercussions continue after President Sebastián Piñera announced yesterday that he was going to veto the bill presented by five opposition senators to pardon the detainees in the midst of the social outbreak if he managed to advance in Congress.
The national prosecutor, Jorge Abbott, also joined in the criticism against the initiative, stating that it “naturalizes violence and crime.”
“Given the nature of this project, what it does is naturalize violence and justify common crime, facts that were committed under the pretext of the social outbreak, facts that are absolutely reprehensible as are the abuses committed by state agents, ”he said in a public statement.
“In this country there are no people detained as a result of their ideology, in Chile there are no political prisoners”, added.
Abbott’s words are added to those of the General Council of Prosecutors, who questioned the scope of the bill presented by senators, indicating that it would be a bad sign for social coexistence and that all the persecutory actions undertaken by prosecutors have as their only end the search for reparation for acts constituting crimes.
In addition, this Tuesday, the Judicial Power, through the spokesperson of the Supreme Court, Gloria Ana Chevesich, also ruled out the existence of political prisoners in our country.
The initiative can only be presented from the Senate, but from the Lower House, deputies of the Broad Front agreed with the initiative in the face of the president’s offensive.
This was expressed by the deputy of Social Convergence, Gonzalo Winter, while the deputy of Commons, Claudia Mix, questioned international organizations, like Human Wright Watch, who denied the existence of political prisoners in our country.
In the Government, the undersecretary of the Interior, Juan Francisco Galli, insisted on criticizing the initiative, classifying it as the impunity project.
