President Sebastián Piñera referred today to the bill presented by five opposition senators, who seek to provide a “general pardon” to people detained or formalized because of their participation in protests of the so-called social outbreak, since October 2019.
The President ruled that he will seek that the bill does not prosper, without ruling out even resorting to his presidential veto power to prevent the approval of the project.
“Our Government expresses its total disagreement and opposition to the general pardon project, and anticipates that if the project advances and if necessary, it will use the power of veto to prevent its approval, because we consider that a bad project, because It violates public order, citizen security, democracy and the rule of law, “he said.
The President also stated that the Executive is in total disagreement with the initiative proposed by Senators Adriana Muñoz (PPD), Juan Ignacio Latorre (RD), Yasna Provoste (DC), Alejandro Navarro (PRO) and Isabel Allende (PS ), noting that it is an initiative that violates public order and interferes with the action of other powers of the State, in this case, with the Courts of Justice.
“We are fully committed to the protection of public order and citizen security, and to our will to combat crime, violence, organized crime, drug trafficking and terrorism with all the instruments that the Constitution and the law grant to the Government. and other powers of the State, “said Piñera, assuring that those who are detained,” are deprived of liberty not by the decision of the Government or by the Prosecutor’s Office, but by the courts. Any attempt to weaken or ignore these values or principles not only weakens public order but democracy “.
