The Minister of Finance, Ignacio Briones, made a mea culpa and commented that on the issue of emergency income, he would have liked it to have been possible to arrive earlier and more widely in the first months of the pandemic.
In addition, he added that the future ruling of the Constitutional Court regarding 10% is very relevant to close the tap of new withdrawals of pension funds. All this in an interview with the newspaper La Tercera.
In any case, the minister emphasized that no country in the world has spent 15 points of GDP only on direct transfers.
Briones’ sayings generated criticism in the opposition. For the Socialist deputy, Marcelo Schilling, who is a member of the House Finance committee, the best way to prevent the withdrawals from continuing is to deliver the economic aid that Chileans are demanding.
Meanwhile, for the Christian Democratic senator, Jorge Pizarro, who is part of the same commission but in the Upper House, the Government, rather than highlighting both the figures of his management, must provide certainty to the citizens regarding economic aid.
In the ruling party they supported Briones. Senator UDI Juan Antonio Coloma, who is a member of the Finance Commission, valued the self-criticism and confirmed the relevance of the future ruling of the Constitutional Court to prevent irregular legislative projects from continuing.
Along the same lines, the deputy for National Renovation, Alejandro Santana, who is a member of the same commission but in the Chamber, agreed on the official self-criticism of the delay in the first months of the pandemic.
The head of the Treasury portfolio commented that in the 2021 budget they will allow the possibility of extending the Emergency Family Income and that it will go hand in hand with health and mobility restrictions.
