The German Government determined the reimposition, as of next Wednesday, of a national quarantine that implies the closure of non-essential businesses, the prohibition of meetings on New Years and the recommendation for work and home schooling.
The government measure blesses the upturn in infections suffered in recent weeks, as announced by Chancellor Angela Merkel.
“We have to act urgently,” Merkel said in an appearance after the crucial meeting held this Sunday with her 16 state ministers.
“We have seen that the infections have grown exponentially in recent days, and that means that we have to mourn many deaths,” added Merkel, after declaring the current containment measures “insufficient”.
According to a previous draft of the final declaration of the meeting, picked up by the German media, these new restrictions would last at least until next January 10.
Almost thirty thousand new cases in Germany
The new coronavirus pandemic that originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan has left 20,200 new cases of coronavirus in Germany in the last 24 hours (compared to 28,438 cases on Saturday) and 321 deaths (for 496 deaths the day before), more and more far from the record of deaths this week, but a balance that still raises the total of infections to 1.3 million people and the deceased, to more than 21,700.
All of this has made Minister Merkel react.
With the new data, the balance of the pandemic in German territory amounts to 1,320,716 infected people and 21,787 deaths, two after the record of 598 deaths per day from Thursday to Friday, according to the balance published this Sunday by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI ), the German government agency responsible for the control of infectious diseases.
