Low participation due to the phase reversal of the Metropolitan Region and little call in regions. That was the tone of the elections that the UDI called to elect its new board of directors, which took place today through 200 polling stations deployed throughout Chile.
Finally, it was the list led by deputy Javier Macaya who prevailed in the election with 55% of the preferences, while the list of former minister Víctor Pérez obtained 45%. The adherents of the winning list, when there were still about 50 tables to be counted, were already drawing joyful accounts for the difference that had been announced around 7:30 p.m.
“We need to be united. We invite the current board of directors and Víctor Pérez’s list to work with the maximum possible unity to work on what is coming, ”commented the UDI president-elect after confirming his triumph.
For his part, former Senator Pérez pointed out that it was “a clean process” and “that the UDI will emerge stronger and we are sure that Javier Macaya will lead the party in very difficult moments.”
According to preliminary figures, about 10,000 people supported. A figure that the unionism valued due to the current pandemic situation and in comparison with the past elections where about 15 thousand militants had participated.
With this, Macaya comes to preside over the union after having been general secretary during the management of former deputy Ernesto Silva, after that he was interim president and later competed in the 2018 contest when he was defeated by the current helmsman, senator Jacqueline Van Rysselberghe .
Along with Macaya, deputy María José Hoffmann comes to the board as secretary general and deputy Gustavo Sanhueza as vice-presidents; the mayor of La Reina, José Manuel Palacios, the former Minister of Women, Isabel Plá and the former councilor of La Cisterna, Patricia Acevedo. The deputy Nicolás Noman for the position of treasurer and the president of the UDI youth, Katherine Montealegre, as deputy secretary.
