This Thursday, the entire Metropolitan Region regressed to phase 2 (Transition) of the Step by Step Plan, a preventive measure – as the authorities themselves have described it – in the face of the increase in Covid-19 infections in the capital.
However, the Metropolitan Region is not the only one that has experienced an increase in coronavirus cases. This is warned by the most recent report from the Espacio Público study center, which warns of a growth in new cases of more than 10% during the last week in Coquimbo, Valparaíso and Biobío, which is added to the emergency situation they are going through the regions of Araucanía to the south.
The research carried out by Eduardo Engel, Camila Gómez, Catalina Gómez, Diego Pardow, Pablo Simonetti, Cassandra Sweet and Eduardo Undurraga, indicates that “the case of Biobío is particularly worrying due to the population density of the area and because the numbers of infections are in their highest levels to date and continue to grow. “
They also warned that “in the southern regions, infections and hospital demand are at very high levels, much more than in the RM”, where levels of more than 10 daily cases per 100,000 inhabitants have been registered in the Ñuble regions to the south, with the sole exception of Aysén.
Meanwhile, they pointed out that “Magellan’s figures are still higher than the distressing figure of 40 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.”
They also highlighted that “during the last week, the positivity indicators reversed a downward trend of several months and began to rise. Nationally, the last week the positivity was 4.6%, compared with 4.1% the previous week. the MRI, where a positivity of 2.3% was reached the week ending on November 13, the value of the last week was 3.1% “.
Re-acceleration of the pandemic
The advance of the pandemic in the country was also alerted by the ICOVID Chile team, an initiative led by the University of Chile, the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and the University of Concepción.
In its report number 18, the specialized report shows that an increase in new cases of around 8% is observed, while the regions that present the greatest increase in this indicator are La Araucanía, Biobío and Coquimbo.
In the Metropolitan Region, an average daily growth of 22.5 cases is observed compared to the previous week, equivalent to a 7.4% increase in new cases. This effect is explained, particularly, by the dynamics of contagion in the Province of Santiago.
Cristóbal Cuadrado, doctor and academic from the School of Public Health of the University of Chile, details that there are “signs of re-acceleration of the pandemic with rising or consistently high contagion indicators in most of the country’s regions, affecting particularly the south-central and southern part of the country. In the case of the Metropolitan Region, which has recently suffered a setback in the Step by Step plan, there is an upward trend, driven particularly by the situation in Greater Santiago and some Health Services such as the Central Metropolitan ”.
Meanwhile, Guillermo Marshall, pro-rector of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, stressed that there is concern about the increases in infections that have been shown in various regions. “Coquimbo, Biobío and La Araucanía are the regions with the most worrying contagion indicators, and they are joined by Ñuble, Los Ríos, Los Lagos and Magallanes due to their high numbers of new cases,” he says.
The transmission indicator (effective R) remains with values above 1, with an increase from 1.04 to 1.05 in the last week at the country level, while at the regional level the highest medians are observed in Coquimbo (1, 45), Aysén (1.24), Tarapacá (1.19), Valparaíso (1.19) and Antofagasta (1.16). In the RM, the R indicator is 1.11, practically maintaining its value compared to last week.
The positivity at the national level has remained stable around 4.5% (yellow color), however, the regional realities are heterogeneous. From the Maule region to the north, all regions are in yellow or green (less than 5%), and from Ñuble to the south, much higher positivities are observed. The figures in La Araucanía (9.5%), Los Ríos (10.1%) and Magallanes (11.2%) are particularly worrying.
