Controversy caused the sayings of Minister Andrés Allamand, after recognizing that “there have been violations of people’s rights” by Carabinieri during the social outburst. Relatives of one of the victims questioned the statements, and say they are a “joke.”
In an interview with the EFE agency, the Chancellor declared that “there has been no margin for impunity: every time it has been evidenced that there has been a transgression, administrative sanctions have been immediately adopted and judicial processes have been opened to punish with the strictness of the law to the guilty ”.
“I want to point out very categorically that, although there have been these transgressions of people’s rights, under no circumstances has this been a kind of institutional policy,” he emphasized.
After the interview, the Minister of the Interior, Rodrigo Delgado, He went out to reinforce the Government’s position, adding that together with the Carabineros they have made all the information available to the Justice.
“What we have are complaints that are being investigated, that both the Government and the police themselves, in this case the Carabineros, have made all the information available so that they can be clarified accordingly,” he added.
However, these statements did not go down well with the families of the victims of the social outbreak, especially those of Alex Nunez, who lost his life after being allegedly beaten by the police on the outskirts of the Metro del Sol station in Maipú, on October 20, 2019.
His case is considered one of the emblematic during the revolt, due to the entire concealment plot that some Carabineros officials would have set up to hide what happened with Núñez.
“We have only received intimidation from the Carabineros”
In conversation with BioBioChile, his widow, Natalia Pérez, He questioned the role that the Government has had and the scant collaboration that they accuse from the Carabineros to clarify what happened.
On the contrary, so far the only thing they say they have received is intimidation and persecution by the police institution.
“We have received absolutely nothing from the Carabineros, on the contrary, the only thing we have received was intimidation from the first day that Alex was murdered until March of this year, which was the last time my son was chased, the car was thrown at him. ”, He relates.
“I was walking with a drone on my head, where I was going the drone was chasing me, in fact my neighbors realized that there were people following me. When Alex’s murder was completed a month ago, outside the house was a battlefield, they had us surrounded, ”he details.
In this context, as a family, they assure that the government’s statements cause them annoyance, increasing the feeling of impunity that invades them.
“I really feel the statements as a mockery of us as a family, because it is not true. Instead of helping us, they have placed obstacles on us, they have obstructed the investigation. But from the government and the Carabineros institution, we have not had any support ”, he questioned.
The death of Alex’s father: “He took it away”
A few months ago, Alex’s father also died from heart complications after two months in hospital El Carmen de Maipú. Although, according to Natalia, the penalty “took him away.”
“Alex’s father was an adult over 78 years old, and he had a leg amputee, so he did all the paperwork with Alex, such everyday things as going for a walk to make payments or in the office,” he adds.
“He could never get over Alex’s death and it affected his heart. He had heart failure that was deteriorating him, and the penalty took him away ”, he says.
“The only thing I hope is that this is clarified, that it does not turn a blind eye, that the Government will put itself in our pants. Alex was an ordinary person, he had to go to deliver a tool and he found these three policemen who, without asking for identification, beat him, murdered him, ”Natalia sentenced.
A policy of cover-up
The family lawyer, Cristián Cruz, for his part, he assures that the case of Alex Núñez is the “paradigm” of a cover-up policy by the State.
“General Rozas himself at the time said that his death had ‘some’ connection with the police institution, that is, half-truths,” criticized the lawyer specializing in Human Rights.
“The State Defense Council filed a complaint for this murder, where in its account it states that police from the 25th Maipú Police Station agreed to lie, to deliver false information, to obstruct the investigation and the possibility of justice, to promote impunity for criminals in uniform, “he said.
In this sense, the lawyer Cruz stoned the statements of Minister Rodrigo Delgado, regarding an alleged collaboration to clarify the complaints that involve the police.
“A few days ago the Public Ministry reiterated to the Carabineros to provide information that it has been requesting for months in this case,” he said.
Impunity
In the case of Alex Núñez there are no formalities, it is an investigation that is still open with diligence, despite the fact that more than a year has passed since his death.
Together with the family they have requested an audience President Sebastián Piñera, Without even receiving any response to date. Similar case happened with then Interior Minister Gonzalo Blumel, who even scheduled an appointment, then changed his agenda.
“Today it is not possible to accept this degree of impunity with respect to a person who was beaten to death… they killed a man with kicks, kicks, in a brutal act, and they were police officers and therefore the demand for truth is greater and justice ”, he added.
In that sense, he regretted that just now that he left his position, Mario Rozas is being summoned to testify for the different cases of police violence during the outbreak of last October.
“General Yáñez, director of the Carabineros, said that he was willing to make a mea culpa and we want him to answer us, will he make a mea culpa for Alex Núñez or will he continue with what his predecessor did, who is summoned to testify? ”, He concluded.
