On December 14 the expected solar eclipse will take place in La Araucanía. And although the astronomical event was a stimulus for many Chileans who wanted to travel to the area, now the pandemic – once again – left the plans in uncertainty.

This Monday, the government announced the decline to “Transition” for the entire Metropolitan Region, starting Thursday 10 at 5:00 am. This measure has forced tourists from the capital to rethink their trips or rightly cancel them, since at this stage of the Step by Step Plan travel between regions is prohibited.

Therefore, the director of the National Tourism Service (Sernatur), Andrea wolleter, clarified who could travel to the south to witness the natural event.

However, he specified that “Yes, it can be done by people who are in communes in phase 3 or 4 throughout the national territory”.

Regarding people who come from abroad, Wolleter said that “They have 24 hours to arrive at the destination, which must also be in phase 3 or 4 to stay in that place”.

Eclipse Health Plan in La Araucanía

In order to avoid trips during the day and the crowds that these displacements could cause, Sernatur decided to close the main access routes to the lake area. Thus, from Sunday, December 13 at 11:59 p.m. and until 4:00 p.m. on Monday, December 14, these will be:

  • Freire – Villarrica
  • Pitrufquén – Ñancul.
  • Loncoche – Villarrica.
  • Access to the coastal area, Route S40, Imperial – Saavedra section.

In addition, the flow in the internal routes of the area will be restricted, from 09:00 hours next Monday until 14:00 hours the same day. That way, It will not be possible to travel on the Villarrica-Pucón, Pucón-Curarrehue, Villarrica-Licanray, Licanray-Coñaripe, and Lincaray-Panguipulli routes.
