Metropolitan mayors reacted to the government’s decision to move the entire region back to Transition phase due to the increase in covid-19 infections.
The information was confirmed this Monday and will begin to apply from Thursday, December 10 at 5:00 in the morning. This will involve travel restrictions on weekends.
After the announcement was made, the communal chiefs demanding that the Government adopt measures to alleviate the social and economic crisis that will mean the setback and they asked the Ministry of Economy to grant permits for the operation of Christmas fairs.
The Mayor of Florida, Rodolfo Carter, He questioned that once again a measure was taken without consulting the municipalities. In addition, he described it as “unreasonable.”
Carter
“We all want to help reduce infections. We said from the beginning that you had to be innovative and daring to face the coronavirus, but trying to ban Christmas not even the Grich would have thought of it, “he said.
In his opinion, the big problem with the setback is that it will not materialize because people need to work on these dates.
“Suppose that only with the Armed Forces we are going to end the Christmas fairs that are in all of Chile, in all the communes, in all the neighborhoods, which are going to be able to prevent trade on the weekend is simply believing that you have the upper hand, in circumstances where you only have the handle“.
For his part, the mayor of La Granja and president of the AChM Health Commission, Felipe Delpin, described the situation as “serious and complicated that must be analyzed by all.”
Economic and social support
“This is a great social crisis that occurs, understanding that on the weekend you cannot work, people cannot leave their homes, they have to be confined and many of our neighbors have commercial and work activities “he explained.
In the same line, Germán Codina, community chief of Puente Alto, asked reactivate financial and merchandise aid to the families that will be affected by the change.
He indicated that he hopes that the measure is not only sanitary, but that it comes accompanied by “An injection of important resources for so many families that they were resuming their commercial activity and are obviously going to be harmed ”.
The Mayor of Providencia, Evelyn Matthei, acknowledged that the news left them “with great sorrow, much frustration at having to return to phase 2 throughout the Metropolitan region.”
Among the consequences of the announcement, he reported that “We will have to suspend our entrepreneurial and craft fairs for Christmas, the restaurants are going to have to work from Monday to Friday and only on terraces ”.
The communal chief reiterated the call to the neighbors to take care of themselves and be responsible in complying with the sanitary measures so that in the shortest possible time they can return to phase 3 and 4.
More critical was the Mayor of Cerro Navia, Mauro Tamayo, who indicated that step back is the result of “Failure of a measure” as is the Step by Step plan.
Precisely because of the above, he called on the Government to make “additional efforts and measures in the social sphere, especially in those communes that show higher mortality rates.”
Similarly, he called the authorities to “End the mixed messages.”
Gonzalo Durán, Mayor Independencia, He stressed that the commune maintains low rates of contagion, that is why they received the news “like a bucket of cold water”, although he considered that it is understandable that it fell back.
Like his peers, he affirmed that it is urgent for the Government to make quick decisions regarding how it will help the most vulnerable families and announced that they asked the Ministry of Economy allow the operation of Christmas fairs.
