All MRI goes back to phase 2 of the “Step by Step” plan: concern about 18% increase in COVID-19 cases

The Ministry of Health delivered this Monday the new changes in the “Step by Step” plan. The most important is the regression of all the municipalities of the Metropolitan Region to phase 2, that of “Transition” as of this Thursday, December 10.

This setback, among other measures, implies that on weekends and holidays there will be quarantine and people will only be able to leave by requesting a permit at the Virtual Police Station.

“The Metropolitan Region has increased its newly diagnosed cases by 18%,” said Health Minister Enrique Paris, expressing concern about the latest figures.

“This figure is very high impact and worries us a lot. We also see an increase in the Valparaíso and Biobío region,” he added.

“That all the municipalities of the RM go back to Step 2 is precisely to avoid returning to Quarantine. This is a preventive measure,” he said.

Interregional travel will not be allowed, as these are only available for communes in phase 3 onward.

However, there will be a change from the old Transition phase of the plan. On this occasion, the opening of restaurants will be allowed, but only on the terrace and with a minimum capacity. “In the case of commerce, they can only open from Monday to Friday. Saturdays and Sundays they must close,” added the Undersecretary for Crime Prevention, Katherine Martorell.

As for the schools, face-to-face classes will not be suspended.

“This is an effort that the Metropolitan Region must make to avoid new infections”, closed Martorell. Paris, meanwhile, said that it is possible if the figures worsen further, to re-declare quarantine in the MRI.

There are also changes in other communes of the country: in the Biobío region, the Arauco commune falls back to Quarantine; in La Araucanía, it goes back to Cuarentena Los Sauces y Angol and Transición, Renaico; and in Magallanes, it goes back to Quarantine Puerto Williams.

Daily balance

As for the figures, there are 1,760 new cases registered in the last 24 hours. There are 1,132 cases with symptoms, 583 asymptomatic and 45 not reported. The total rises to 562,142. Of these, 9,892 are active and 536,267 recovered.

There are 35 deaths, for a total of 15,663.

There are 657 hospitalized, 508 on mechanical ventilation and 64 critically ill. There are 295 ventilators available and 38,743 PCR tests have been performed (5,576,517 in total).
