Rudy Giuliani has tested positive for the coronavirus, President Donald Trump confirmed Sunday in a tweet about his personal attorney, the latest in his circle of close associates to become infected.
Giuliani was admitted to Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington on Sunday, according to a person with knowledge of the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to publicly discuss the matter.
In recent weeks, the 76-year-old former New York City mayor has traveled extensively to hotly contested states in the elections in a bid to help Trump reverse his election loss. On numerous occasions, he has had long meetings with local officials, without wearing a mask.
The president wished Giuliani a speedy recovery. “Get well soon Rudy, we’ll move on !!!” Trump tweeted.
Giuliani did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but on Sunday afternoon he retweeted Trump’s announcement of his diagnosis. He also thanked a conservative user on the social network who had said that he prayed for him.
At the moment it was not clear what symptoms he had developed, if he had any.
