The Liberal Party (PL) announced this Saturday that, after an extraordinary general council, it will cease to be part of the Frente Amplio conglomerate, formed three years ago to confront the “duopoly” of the former New Majority and Chile Vamos. It was the deputy Vlado Mirosevic, who through a tweet announced the decision, stating that “it is a sad day, but we do it calm and serene because the path that this historic moment requires is the opposition unit to build constitutional majorities.”
The tension in the sector due to the role that the oppositions must fulfill in this period, marked immediately by the election of the 155 representatives in the Constitutional Convention, has generated a strong debate about the type of alliances to achieve the necessary majorities that allow make significant changes to the fundamental charter. And the Liberal Party, aware of that objective, did not succeed in getting the FA to enter into the logic of building majorities, which is why it finally resolved to leave the Frente Amplio pact.
“We liberals did not have the strength to impose, or convince, our colleagues from the Broad Front that opposition unity is the only possible way within the framework of the constituent process, and above all, to prevent this bad government of Sebastián Piñera have continuity in the future, “said deputy Mirosevic, after the general council of the PL, held at the Camilo Henríquez Theater.
“We will continue to insist on unity, this time outside the FA, we will continue to insist that a single list is required for the constituent process, we will continue to insist that presidential primaries are required for unity of all the opposition, of the On the contrary, with the decisions that the FA is taking, we are giving an artificial majority to the right, which it does not have ”, added deputy Mirosevic.
For his part, PL deputy Alejandro Bernales stressed that leaving the party is about “a decision that we would not have wanted to make.” But he claimed to have done everything possible to prevent it from happening. However, “there are legitimate differences that prevent us from continuing to work in the same coalition,” he said.
“We liberals will do everything possible so that the right wing does not have the next government. That requires the maximum possible unity of all the opposition and progressivism. We cannot be a testimonial project. And that is not merely declarative but requires action. concrete steps to make it happen, “added Bernales.
New political address
For a couple of weeks, the liberals had been expressing some discomfort with some decisions of the bloc that they share with Democratic Revolution, Social Convergence, Commons, Common Force and Unir. The question is what will now be the political address that the PL will adopt, after leaving the FA. One option is to look to the Constituent Unit (PS, PPD, DC, PR, PRO and Citizens) and from there to unite forces for the electoral challenges that lie ahead, starting with the creation of a unitary list for the Constitutional Convention and then for the election of the presidential candidate.
The cracks produced by what will be the alliance policy that the FA will adopt, closer to the PC, made it impossible for the PL to continue in the conglomerate, they warn in the community. But the bad streak had already started yesterday with the disengagement of Deputy Natalia Castillo and Deputy Pablo Vidal from the ranks of the Democratic Revolution, which made the media official yesterday. His resignations raised all the alarms about the dangerous dismemberment that is affecting the front-line. The blow for RD was hard, a party that also failed to reverse the departure of PL from the collective. And it was the president of the DR, Catalina Pérez, who said yesterday that she hoped “to continue counting on the Liberal Party also within our ranks, because we have no doubt that there is a transversal conviction to push the unity of all transforming actors “. But the decision of the Liberal Party, its president, Luis Felipe Ramos, and its deputies had already been taken.
