This Wednesday, the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications (MTT), Gloria Hutt, and the Mayor of the Ñuble region, Christopher Jardua, -in the company of the state company EFE-, announced the award of six new trains that will modernize the Alameda-Chillán service, a project that is part of the Ñuble modernization plan and involves an investment of US $ 115 million by the government, of which US $ 70 million will be used to purchase the six latest generation trains to cover the section.
In this regard, Minister Hutt pointed out that the trains, which will be manufactured by the Chinese consortium CRR-Sifang, will be “Bimodal” and that “They will operate with electricity or diesel, they will have universal accessibility, air conditioning, USB ports, Wi-Fi, cafeteria, space to store suitcases, among other attributes.”
The Ministry of Transport announced that the route from Santiago to Chillán will have a “Express service of 3 hours and 40 minutes”. The one that to this day contemplates almost 5 hours of travel.
For his part, he indicated that “Starting in 2023, we will link Talca and Santiago with an express service of 2 hours and 22 minutes.”
Regarding the routes, these trains are expected to generate 12 daily trips, which in turn would directly impact the number of people transported by this route.
According to data provided by Minister Hutt, the public would increase from “200 thousand passengers per year from today to 800 thousand, which shows our vision and determination to recover the train in Chile”.
