During the last hours an image was viralized in which a doctor is seen hugging an elderly patient who is infected with coronavirus.

The image was captured last Thursday by a Getty photographer on Thanksgiving Day in the United States, at the United Memorial Hospital in Houston.

One of the protagonists of the registry is the doctor Joseph Varon, head of the Intensive Care Unit of the enclosure.

In dialogue with CNN, he related that “I am in the covid unit and I see this elderly patient getting out of bed, trying to leave, crying.”

“I went to him and asked him: why are you crying? He replied: I want to be with my wife. So I hugged him,” he said.

The doctor indicated that the patient “was only crying and after a while he recovered and stopped”, indicating the doctor that during that moment he felt “very sad”.

In that sense, he pointed out that hospitalization for coronavirus patients “is very difficult”, especially for the elderly since they feel very alone, reporting that some patients have already tried to escape because “they are so isolated that they want to leave.”

“We have so many patients that sometimes we cannot hug them all, hold their hand or at least try to be more human,” he added.

Varon expressed that the patient who appears in the image is already better and is close to being discharged.

Work days without rest

The doctor also indicated that he completed 256 days of continuous work in the unit, without having any rest due to the pandemic.

“I don’t know why I haven’t broken down. My nurses cry in the middle of the day,” he added.

Finally, he called on people to respect social distancing and health regulations.

“I work every day and people do everything that is wrong: they go to bars, restaurants, shopping centers, it is wrong,” said the doctor.
