The general director of the Carabineros, Ricardo Yanez, referred to the citizens’ questioning about the actions of the uniformed police and whether they should apologize for the excesses committed by some of their officials.

In an interview with El Mercurio, when asked what the institution should do to regain the trust of the people, Yáñez stated that they should “update” and “be up to the demand that society requires today.”

In this same sense, he assured that “the institution grew a lot, in number of human resources, in media, but obviously we must meet the demands that Chilean society requires.”

Regarding whether the Carabineros should apologize, after cases such as Gustavo Gatica, Fabiola Campillai or the young man who fell into the Mapocho River from the Pío Nono bridge, the general director pointed out that “We must, as an institution, make a mea culpa, without a doubt, regarding what happened”.

However, he stressed that “we were the first to denounce ourselves and put all the information before the Public Ministry. And if someone moved away from the protocols and regulations to act, they will have to respond ”.

On the other hand, he addressed the questions of some officials of the uniformed police, who have accused “lack of protection”, especially after the murder of the second corporal Eugenio Nain.

“It is unfortunate, because there have indeed been a series of situations and questions that have somehow delegitimized the actions of the police. And that generates deterioration, ”Yáñez said.

Along the same lines, he stated that “every time our actions are questioned, obviously the police officer feels that there may be a kind of lack of protection on the part of the agencies in charge of criminal prosecution.”

“What cannot happen is that society as a whole, like the institutions, does not support the carabinero in the exercise of his functions”, he sentenced.
