The expectation was more from the point of view of the morbid than sport, but against all the negative forecasts of the experts, the fight that marked the return of Mike Tyson to a ring after 15 years was much better than expected.
“Iron Mike”, at age 54, no longer has the agility or power in the goals with which he dominated the heavyweight during the 80s and 90s, but he does have the same aggressiveness that transformed him into the so-called “Baddest Man of the world”. And so felt his rival, Roy Jones Jr (51), who during long periods of combat had to limit himself to defending and protecting himself.
Despite the fact that the rules imposed to protect two veteran boxers prevented a normal fight, the truth is that Tyson went on the attack from the beginning as was always his style and at no time did he hold back. On several occasions, his right and left hooks to the body really hurt his opponent, one of the best counter punchers of all time.
“Iron Mike” eased the pressure a bit in the last three rounds, but still continued to the finish looking for the decisive blow, demonstrating unusual physical condition and stamina for someone his age.
Perhaps to maintain the character of exhibition the judges determined that everything ended in a “tie”, but if they had counted the points, it was not possible that Tyson would have been the winner.
Now the doubt remains. Although this was a special occasion that occurred in the context of the global pandemic, all boxing lovers were left with the impression that Saturday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles might not be the last time. that we see Tyson in a ring.
Will more be encouraged?
