They tried to adulterate the patents, but the combinations of letters and numbers associated with the vehicle brands were the perfect trail for officers from the PDI’s Special Police Investigations Brigade (BIPE) to reconstruct the route they made on the night of Tuesday, October 6. The raising of public and private security cameras was key so that the police could find the identities of those who that day arranged to go to the home of the High Complexity Central North prosecutor, Ximena Chong, and leave a letter with a threat death motivated by the formalization for attempted homicide that the investigator carried out two days before against a policeman who drove a teenager to the Mapocho river in the middle of a day of demonstrations.
This Friday, Judge Tatiana Escobar ordered the preventive detention of Pablo Martínez Castro, one of the eight defendants for the death threats against the investigator, but who also He was charged with possession of a prohibited firearm. At his home in Quinta Normal, the police, in the middle of raids for his arrest, found a UZI submachine gun. The regional prosecutor Centro Norte (S) Francisco Jacir will appeal the decision adopted by the court in a hearing that in some places was secret from the public. How did the PDI find the identities of the accused? According to the investigation, the number of security cameras that the Providencia, Las Condes and Vitacura communes have made it possible to reconstruct the route of those who today are accused of being members of a far-right group that sought to intimidate Chong.
Witnesses from whom a statement was taken and the images taken made it possible to first establish the number of cars and people involved. Prosecutor Chong and her son referred to two men who, riding on a motorcycle, left an envelope in the mailbox of the house after making the engine of their vehicles ring several times. But there were not two. There were eight people who that day were guarding the house of the Head of High Complexity just meters away. The BIPE established the presence of three vehicles and two motorcycles that in a kind of “caravan” moved through the eastern sector that day. During the hearing, prosecutor Jacir explained that the first individualized order was that of the accused Fernando Hasler, who that day was driving a Hyundai brand car, Santa Fe model. Goldberger and Martínez were the ones who left the letter. At the end of their mission, they all took different directions.

The investigation into the death threats against Prosecutor Chong began two days before this event. Chong in those days was still the target of harassment and death threats through his social networks. “Soon you are going to leave, woman and you and your desire to eliminate Carabineros will fall, just remember life will be impossible for you”, was one of the many messages he received. Thus, on October 7 there was an incident that involved the Carabineros Lieutenant Colonel Fredy Vergara, who was controlled in the vicinity of Chong’s house after, dressed in civilian clothes and riding on a motorcycle, made a gesture, according to the PDI, in front of the investigator’s home. The policeman denied knowing that Chong lived there.
When questioned by the PDI in this investigation, he said that That day he wanted to go to have his motorcycle repaired and he got lost in the streets and then decided to go back and follow the daily route of his work. “Why did you slow down in front of Chong’s house?” A BIPE commissioner asked him, showing him a video, to which the Carabineros officer assured that “It is because a vehicle that caught my attention was parked against the direction of my traffic and I looked for signs indicating the direction of the streets, without knowing the residence address of the Prosecutor.”

On October 10 there was another incident that was recorded by the IDPs. At 2:00 a.m. and while making a fixed point at Chong’s house a private ambulance passed through the place. Then two subjects dressed in military-style camouflage clothing got out and asked the police “Does prosecutor Chong live here?” “Are you from the Human Rights Unit?”. Faced with the strange episode, the BIPE officers controlled the identity of both subjects who said they were there out of curiosity. Not being targets of the investigation, they were released.
